Trends update report, “In 2018, domestic
production decreased by 3.4 per cent to
21.65 million half-litres and domestic sales
rose modestly by 0.3 per cent.”
Despite this, beer’s impact on the
Canadian economy shouldn’t be under-estimated;
according to the Conference
Board of Canada, the beer industry sup-ports
149,000 jobs while contributing $13.6
billion to the country’s GDP. There are also
signs that the industry is growing in other
ways, too. Brewing facilities in Canada have
increased over 20 per cent in the last two
years, from a total of 817 to just under 1,000
in 2018, with new facilities opening – seem-ingly
– weekly.
In addition to bringing together almost
1,000 brewers scattered across the second
biggest country in the world, Canadian
Beer Day also provides people a chance to
appreciate the industry for what it is.
“Beer is first and foremost a bever-age
that brings the brewer and the grower
together into a product that they can share
with their customers, in an environment
that encourages conversation and social
well-being,” said Harford. “This is going to
be a community-wide event. It’s for any-body
that believes that Canada’s history
and its culture around beer needs to be rec-ognized
and celebrated.”
