Salmon-Safe
Some B.C. wineries are doing their
part to help Pacific salmon through
an eco-certification program which
promotes farming methods that can
preserve and protect salmon habitats
and water quality
For people on Canada’s West Coast, the Pacific salmon
has long been not only a primary food source, but also
an important cultural symbol for many who live there. In
recent times, an alarming drop in salmon numbers is raising con-cern
about the future of this iconic fish, but some wine producers
in British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley are doing their bit to help.
Nestled on a hillside high above Okanagan Lake, Sage Hills
Estate Winery and Vineyard is one of 11 Okanagan wineries and
vineyards that have signed up for Salmon-Safe, an eco-certification
program that promotes safe farming practices which benefit salm-on
by protecting water quality, maintaining watershed health and
restoring habitat.
