required for shipping and an additional
$3,000 to have them installed. Coletta says
she’s observed that the cost of concrete
tanks has risen significantly in recent years
due to increased demand.
Hotte notes the biggest concrete wine
tanks can run up to $35,000 nowadays,
but says when you consider a 200 litre oak
barrel can cost $1,000 to $1,700 and that a
concrete tank can last for decades, concrete
can be a more cost-effective option in the
long run.
According to Rosenblatt, concrete
tanks have become particularly popular
with smaller wineries as well as for making
smaller batches of higher-end, expensive
wine, but more and more big-name winer-ies
are now using them as well.
For those wineries which open their
doors to the public and have concrete tanks
on view, there can be an added benefit.
Concrete tanks can be quite striking to look
at, leaving many customers impressed.
At Okanagan Crush Pad, for instance,
a black Classic Egg tank is situated right by
the wine shop and, as Coletta points out, it
always gets a lot of comments.
“Everyone asks, ‘Where did these
come from? They’re absolutely gorgeous!’”
she said.

“You’re getting a fruit-forward, wide
mouth minerality with it that you just
don’t get in oak or stainless steel.”
