You may have heard the expression, “You can’t go home
again.” If so, you probably also know that old sayings don’t
always hold true.
Just ask Russell Murphy. The 43-year-old Maritimer grew up
in the Annapolis Valley in Nova Scotia, but left to pursue a career
as a chef, honing his culinary skills at a number of fine dining
establishments that included the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise
luxury hotel in Alberta’s Banff National Park.

After moving to the U.S. to take a job as the fine dining
chef for an international cruise line, Murphy met his future wife
Colleen, a fellow Canadian, and the couple eventually decided to
return home to Canada – but first they had to make a tough call:
Just where in Canada should they go?
“Colleen was from Ontario and I was from Nova Scotia,” said
Murphy. “We kind of flipped that proverbial coin, heads or tails,
Nova Scotia or Ontario, and that’s how we got back here.”
