industry. The company went public on the
Toronto Stock Exchange in 1985.
When Croft joined the brewery in
2008, however, he described the company
as “a fixer upper.” He was tasked with steering
the company in a different direction and
a short time later he hired Russell Tabata.
At this time, Waterloo Brewing had
fully functioning breweries in Formosa and
Kitchener and a brew house/corporate
office in downtown Waterloo. Croft said the
executive team felt that based on the size of
Waterloo Brewing, it should be housed in
a single location. The company shut down
its Waterloo building in 2015 and closed
its Formosa location in 2017, shifting the
entire operation to Kitchener.
Major Investments
Tabata said that part of the company’s longterm
strategy “was to consolidate and get
into a single-source, state-of-the-art facility.”
Over the past five years, the company
has invested $35 million into its Kitchener
facility and increased its size to 115,000
square feet.
In November 2018, the company
announced it would be spending nearly $10
million more to add another 65,000 square
