Betty “because of the real apple and cinnamon taste. Also, the
Farmer’s Blend because of the real coffee flavour and right amount
of sweetness. And, the Oh My Garlic (OMG) is really taking off
because of flu season. It makes a heck of a Caesar!”
Safety and environmental initiatives
In this day and age, heavy attention is placed on companies to have
strong safety initiatives. Haugen says they are diligent in the labo-ratory
testing alcohol content, and bottle washing and sanitizing.
“We use government-calibrated hydrometers and scales. All
our barrels are virgin charred oak barrels to ensure they have not
been used for any previous grain spirits. Additionally, our business
supports Alberta farmers and reduces transportation costs. Being
locally sourced and produced reduces our carbon footprint,” he said.
Back40 Distillery distributes its products in Alberta by
Connect Logistics.
“Any liquor store can order through Connect Logistics and
have it delivered,” said Lazaruik. “Our distillery is also a bonded
warehouse, so we can self-distribute. We sell out of our distillery
direct and also at local farmers’ markets.”
What’s next?
As for what the future holds for Back40 Distillery, the duo would
like to start their own online e-commerce store.
“We plan on increasing our distilling capacity with larg-er
fermenting tanks and still,” said Haugen. “And we want to
add seasonal liqueurs from locally grown berries and fruits.”
