Hopping
into 2020 Lindsay Risto,
Happy new year and welcome to our annual beer issue! This issue is packed with
some incredible profiles and articles that have a focus on the beer sector. However,
I truly believe the best practices and stories shared within these articles
are universal and applicable to all sectors of the Canadian beverage industry.
Our cover story dives into the complex world of hops. With so many varieties – and
new ones being discovered – and distributors of hops to choose from, we hope that this
article helps you make an informed decision about the best sourcing method for your
brewery. Find the story on page 18.
Be sure to check out our three sector profiles in this issue as well; they are quite
inspirational, and I think a great way to start off 2020. We caught up with establishments
big and small. From Sleeman Breweries’ resurrection of the family recipe book (did you
know that they also had spirits in that book?) on page 4, to the small, but mighty Mad
Laboratory Distilling (it’s a largely one-man operation) on page 10, to Stratus Vineyards’
continued green efforts (they were the first building in Canada to be LEED certified) on
page 14, the one point that really stuck with me was the intense passion each has for
their craft.
On page 29, we take a look at the continued need for interprovincial trade for the
alcohol sector. Be sure to reach out to your elected officials to express the need for directto
consumer legislation. A reduction in these barriers is sure to produce a bottom-line
boost for all industry players.
Looking to offer event hosting at your tap room in 2020? Flip to page 39 for some
great information on how to get your event programming off the ground. There are a lot of
considerations to make when deciding to offer your space for events, and this article does
a great job in guiding you through those considerations.
Don’t forget, you can find Poured Canada on Facebook and Twitter, please give us a
follow. Next up is our annual spirits issue. If you have a topic that you would like to see
covered in that issue (or any future issue), feel free to drop me a line. As always, I’m on the
lookout for comments and feedback on how we can make Poured Canada serve you better.
I look forward to hearing from you, and all the best for 2020.
