the knowledge and skills required to produce high-quality barley
malt as well as a thorough understanding of how finished malt
attributes impact the brewing process and beer quality,” said
Watts. “The class sizes are small and students are given hands-on
training by a staff of highly skilled instructors.”
“The one-week intensive program is targeted at people who
want to learn the craft of malting, brewers that wish to better
understand the major raw material in beer or existing maltsters
who wish to upgrade their skills. The three-day program is targeted
at people interested in an overall understanding of the Canadian
malting barley value chain and high-level knowledge of the malting
and brewing processes,” Watts said, noting further that they are
capable of developing programs on a custom basis for those who
require remote access or have unique requirements.
The future
“From Day 1 we have sought to be independent. We are not
involved in direct sales and as such the malt barley sector has
learned they can trust our data and our recommendations,” said
Li. “Our message to the sector is that they should be prepared for
change and we can help. Older barley varieties are declining in
acreage and we can demonstrate the quality characteristics and
performance of our new varieties that have better yields and disease
resistance, ultimately making them more competitive.”
With the CMBTC providing service to the entire value chain,
expect more from the facility as it moves forward. “We are an
industry-led not-for-profit organization where the funding comes
from our members. As our members’ needs grow and change, we
will be there with the knowledge-base, well-equipped state-of-theart
facilities and the respected credentials that have made us one
of the world’s most trusted sources of information on malt barley,”
said Watts.
