They have already held preliminary
discussions with another Winnipeg-based
artist and brewmaster about their next
offering, which they plan to release this fall.
Chute, who works full-time as a
general contractor, describes Blank Canvas
as something of a passion project for him
and his wife, a marketing guru. He says
the primary purpose of the endeavour is
to help bring a little bit more attention to
Winnipeg artists and the city’s growing
craft brewery scene.
“We sort of see ourselves as a marketing
company. We market our beer to the
arts community and the art to the beer
community so those fans and their tastes
can overlap a little bit by the time we’re
done,” he said.
While Collective Arts and Blank
Canvas share an appreciation for the power
of collaboration, both have some advice for
brewers considering such alliances.
“Don’t do this as a marketing ploy; do it
because it’s your passion,” Johnston said. “If
it’s your passion, great because then you’ll
get up every day and you’ll just keep trying
to get better and better at it.”
“If someone knows what they’re doing,
just let them do it,” Chute said. “Joyal is
an incredible brewer and Barteski is an
incredible artist. If you get good people like
that who are passionate about what they’re
doing, everything is easy.”
