Canopy Growth has already shipped
1.2 million cannabis-infused beverage cans. Its
No. 1 bestseller is Houseplant Grapefruit, a
sparkling water with 2.5 mg of THC that tastes
similar to a grapefruit LaCroix® or Bubly®.
The interest comes as consumers look
for more benefits from their beverages.
Even though everyone’s experience of CBD
is different, with no one blanket effect, it
does offer a calming effect without the risk
of impairment.
“Particularly in these stressful times,
consumers want to feel relaxed, calm and
happy. They want those feelings while being
fully alert and aware, not high, hyper or
drunk, and CBD can make that happen,”
said Harold Han, PhD, an emulsion
chemist who is the founder and chief
scientific officer of Vertosa, a California-based
company providing made-to-order
CBD-infused formulations to beverage
companies looking to break into the
cannabis market.
CBD can make that happen because
it’s not Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) – the
psychoactive compound of the cannabis
plant that makes a person feel high. Instead,
CBD is not psychoactive and is sourced
from hemp. CBD’s full range of benefits is
still being studied, including its potential
cancer-fighting and neuroprotective
properties. In some people, CBD can relieve
pain and inflammation, reduce stress and
anxiety, assist in a more restful sleep and
deliver a relaxed, happy feeling without
energy loss.
Providing these benefits in a drink
also may remove any stigma from cannabis
products for some and make them more
appealing to a wider demographic.
