Bowen says the purpose of the
mapping system is not only to assist
scientific research, but also to help vineyard
operators in B.C. grow a better crop.
“Every vineyard block in our database
has information we provide back to the
grower to help guide their irrigation and
other management practices,” she said,
adding that the database continues to
be updated.
“It’s still ongoing. There are always
new vineyards being established so we’re
catching up, and we’re doing more soil
mapping and analysis.”
The mapping system is actually only
a small part of the important viticulture
research performed by Bowen and her
team. Other projects such as investigating
control measures for wine grape diseases,
and how cover crops can suppress pests
and improve soil health, can directly benefit
the wine industry by expanding agronomic
knowledge about what works for growing
high-quality grapes.
“Of course, management practices
matter. What you choose to do in the
vineyard, how much you irrigate, how
you train your vines and trellis them, how
much crop you leave on them, whether you
do any summer pruning, how you expose
