away from the city. Most of the hops have
come from that company and with so
many brewing companies in the Maritimes
now, the demand for hops has been on
the increase. Their local grower recently
relocated to Prince Edward Island, but Vair
 expects the relationship will continue.
 Community support
It’s important to support the community
and Vair says Big Tide conducts fundraisers
on behalf of Bobbie’s Hospice, which
 provides 24-hour, in-patient palliative
care in a home-like setting. For Big Tide’s
10th anniversary it created a special event
featuring food and beer with tickets and
T-shirts sold in support of the charity.
Like so many others in the hospitality
industry, Big Tide has been impacted
by COVID-19. Staff were laid off and
 the restaurant only recently re-opened
a portion of its seating to meet health
 regulations. The company started selling
beer cans in December and that remained
popular when the bar was closed.
“The amount of beer we sell at the bar
has dropped. We used to run a trivia night
on Tuesdays and Wednesday evenings, and
 Big Tide’s brewing equipment
we probably had close to 90 people here at
night for two hours. That’s impossible for us
 to do now,” he said.
Fortunately, the increase in beer can
sales, a loyal following who continued
to order takeout food and a reduction in
staffing hours has meant that the business
continues to operate. As health restrictions
ease, Vair has been slowly able to bring staff
back to work. The company still remains

“In the future we’ll be looking at
 introducing the hard seltzer, which
my youngest server got pretty excited
about when she heard the news. It must
mean that it’s pretty popular with the
 younger crowd.”
